DeWine appoints Jon Husted to fill J.D. Vance's seat in Senate
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced that he will appoint Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted to fill Senator J.D. Vance's seat as he takes on the role of Vice President.
This announcement came at a 1 p.m. press conference from DeWine.
This announcement comes as Ohio-based U.S. Senator J.D. Vance prepares to fill the shoes of Vice President in president-elect Donald Trump's administration, which would leave his seat in the Senate vacant.
Ohio law says the governor would need to select someone to fill a Senate seat in the event that a Senator resigns prior to the end of their term. Vance's term would have lasted until 2028.
According to NBC News, DeWine had previously said appointing someone who could win a competitive Republican primary next year would be among his chief considerations.
At the press conference, DeWine said he chose Husted to fill Vance's shoes because he has known him and worked with him for many years and knows that he knows and cares about Ohio.
"In every major decision that I have made in the last six years as Governor of Ohio, Jon Husted has played a part in that decision. And those times, we don't always agree on everything. ... But even in the cases when he saw things differently, my decision was informed and was helped by his input," DeWine said.
Following the announcement, Husted himself took the stand and thanked DeWine for the opportunity.
"I appreciate that you have placed so much trust in me. First as a running mate, then as Lieutenant Governor and now as your appointee to the Senate," Husted said.
Husted went on to discuss what he plans to do during his time as a U.S. Senator.
"I really look forward to working with President Trump and Vice President Vance and the Republican majority who have an America first agenda to fight inflation, stop illegal immigration and advance conservative values and that's what I'll do because that's what the people of Ohio need," Husted said.
Husted went on to say he wants to return power from the federal government to the states. Particularly in issues like education, workforce and social programs, as well as focus on technological advancement.
There is no timeframe for when a successor to Husted will be chosen for Lieutenant Governor at this time, nor is there a timeframe for when Husted will be sworn in as a U.S. Senator.
