NHTSA looking into certain models of GM trucks and SUVs, Cadillac SUVs for engine failure risk
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a potential issue with certain models of General Motor trucks, Cadillac SUVs, and GMC trucks and SUVs with L87 V8 engines.
According to the NHTSA, 39 complaints of engine failure in GM vehicles, with the V8 engine impacting 877,710 vehicles built between 2091 and 2024, are being investigated.
Vehicles that are part of the NHTSA investigation include model year 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban, 2021-2024 GMC Yukon, and 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade vehicles.
The Office of Defects Investigation for the NHTSA is opening a preliminary evaluation to determine the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.
The complainants report a bearing failure that may result in either engine seizure or breaching of the engine block by the connecting rod. They report that there was no detectability prior to the failure.
No injuries or crashes have been reported in the cases being investigated.
