The fate of Sharon Regional Medical Center is uncertain, as Medical Properties Trust said they were 'unable to proceed' with the deal to reopen the hospital on Wednesday.

Mercer County Commissioners are frustrated a deal can't be worked out between all parties involved and fear for the affected employees and families. This comes as a meeting with several community stakeholders is set for Friday.

"Speaking on behalf of Mercer County, as the County Commissioner, we are definitely looking for an operator for that hospital," said Commissioner Ann Coleman to 21 News.

The Mercer County Commissioners plan to meet with the Penn Northwest Development Corporation on Friday, a group that promotes business development and expansion in the community.

"When there's going to be a job loss, they're always on the forefront of trying to prevent that," explained Commissioner Bill Finley to 21 News.

In the meeting, the group's plan to discuss what they can do amid Sharon Regional's legal battles. During Thursday's commissioner's meeting in Mercer, Commissioner Finley and Commissioner Timothy McGonigle emphasized the added stress on county EMS workers with Sharon Regional's uncertainty.

"It's the stability," Finley added. "EMS in Pennsylvania is very fragile and there are not enough workers. Everybody struggles to keep ambulances in service and now that they're going to be traveling further distances, we do have a lot of concerns about that as well."

"I think there's still room for negotiation on making this happen," Coleman added. "We have a lot of communities who are committed to helping to provide some seed funding for this. I don't think we are abandoning that effort."

The Mercer County Commissioners say they continue to monitor this situation but are limited on what they can do to help other than possibly creating a resolution to give the hospital money.

"We're sort of on the sidelines," Finley added. "We're ready to support if there's a way but we need to see what an agreement would be before we can commit any funds. It is disheartening how we haven't come up with a way to save the hospital."

"I hate all the uncertainty in this situation," Coleman added. "For the employees and the families."
