Debate heating up on relocation of Mahoning County Board of Elections office
Debate is heating up on the relocation of the Mahoning County Board of Elections office.
21 News recently reported that the Board is looking to move out of its current location on Oak Hill Avenue in Youngstown with its eye on the old InfoCision building on Patriot Boulevard in Austintown, which was purchased by the county last year.
However, county commissioners remain divided on whether or not to move the office there.
Election officials say the move is necessary because the current building is no longer suitable for operations, noting that voting machines sit under tarps to protect from leaks, pipes are patched together and hallways are filled with empty rooms and signs of decay.
However, while newly-elected Mahoning County Commissioner Geno DiFabio says he agrees the move is necessary, the process shouldn't be rushed.
"We're not going to move tomorrow, next week or next month on saying 'yes, you can go into that building.' It's not feasible. It's not the way to do things," DiFabio said.
However, Mahoning County Board of Elections Director Tom McCabe tells 21 News this move is about more than just convenience.
"The building itself is probably only under 40% occupied, so from a counting standpoint, it really doesn't make sense anymore," McCabe said.
As it stands, the future of the Board of Elections office remains uncertain with no clear timeframe for a move or resolution.
