An emergency parking ban in Niles went into effect Thursday afternoon. The police chief, Jay Holland said all vehicles must be removed from city streets.

Despite the ban, Niles police said compliance has been an issue in some areas, and they are calling for increased enforcement to ensure streets are clear for snow plows.

"It does force us to leave a summons traffic citation on the car, and in certain cases, we'll tow the car out of the way if it's creating a problem where the street department can't access and treat the roads," Niles Police Captain John Marshall said.

Officials say when cars are left on the street, it disrupts effective snow removal.

Employees at the Girard City Street Department said parked cars are one of the biggest obstacles they face, and trying to plow around them can lead to other accidents.

"We've hit mailboxes, we've hit telephone poles, hitting the curb," Girard Street Department Foreman, Tommy Watts said.

Complying with parking bans can protect your vehicle from snow plows.

"You don't have to worry about your cars getting pegged with salt while we're driving," Heavy Equipment Operator, Joey Cavalier said.
