The Cortland Fire Department has been called to a house fire on the city's 190 block of Hillman Drive.

The fire was reported a little after 1 p.m.

Our 21 News crew at the scene says a man and his dog safely escaped the fire inside the house.

The fire department assisted in getting the resident out of the home after a fire broke out in the rear of the home.

The Cortland Fire Chief David Rea told 21 News that they also rescued the resident's birds from inside the house.

Howland, Bazetta and Cortland all responded to the scene.
