Police in Youngstown have determined a report of a pipe bomb in downtown Youngstown Monday morning to be a false alarm.

A Penguin Alert from Youngstown State University urged students to avoid the area of the WRTA bus station on West Federal Street near Vindicator Square due to an "incident." The alert has since been canceled.

Youngstown Police Captain Jason Simon confirmed with 21 News that police are investigating reports of a pipe bomb in the area.

However, crews on scene told 21 News this turned out to be a false alarm and the suspicious object was actually a battery pack wrapped in duct tape.

A news release from WRTA says the bus station alerted police of a bomb threat and closed the station as a precaution.

Our 21 News videographer reports that buses are back up and running and the scene has been cleared. WRTA has since confirmed this information as well.
