2000: For the eighth year in a row, Austintown led Mahoning County in new housing starts, with 105 in 1999. Canfield was second, with 76 single-family houses built.

Mahoning County Sheriff Randall Wellington has replaced the four-page application for new deputies with a 20-page document and issued a rule that the sheriff must give prior approval to any off-duty work by deputies. The changes come after two deputies hired by prior sheriffs were arrested on cocaine trafficking charges. 

Youngstown Mayor Patrick Ungaro says he is surprised that a state audit found that the city has neglected to collect about $5 million a year, which is owed in income taxes. He disagrees with the city's recommendation to contract with a private company to improve collection methods. 
 
1985: The executive committee of the Community Corp. approved $2.3 million in allocations to more than 40 agencies and programs. The largest distributions were to the Red Cross, $315,000; YMCA, $154,000; YWCA, $145,000; and Catholic Service League, $133,000.  

By a narrow margin, the 235 Warren municipal employees of Local 74, AFSCME, agree to a new contract that includes a 3 percent wage increase, continued paid hospitalization, and a closed shop.

Reflecting a continuing strong demand for Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cavaliers and Pontiac Sunbirds, General Motors announces an increase in the speed of the Lordstown assembly line to 3.5 cars an hour. 

1975: The total number of people in Columbiana County on probation has increased 76 percent since 1969, from 95 to 157.

Al Shanker, president of the American Federation of Teachers, told some 500 teachers and labor leaders in Youngstown that the rising birth rate could create a future teacher surplus. 

The Youngstown Community Corp. gives the Mahoning County Chapter of the Red Cross a month to agree to agency affiliation with the United Appeal. 

1950: More than 800 people fill Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church preceding the dedication of the new school building. Bishop Emmett M. Walsh, coadjutor bishop of Youngstown, officiates the dedication. 

Football star and Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe is honored in Washington, D.C., by the Touchdown Club with a special award for "All-Time All-American."

U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan, D-Youngstown, endorses the senatorial campaign of Joseph Ferguson to face Republican Robert Taft after emerging from a meeting with President Harry Truman.
