Struthers city council considers levy for safety forces
City council members in Struthers met on Wednesday evening to discuss the possibility of adding a police and fire levy to the next election ballot.
City leaders said their first priority would be improving ambulance services by upgrading equipment and hiring more people.
"Anytime someone is off now, we don't have enough to run the ambulance," Fire Chief Michael Agnone said.
If approved, the additional funding would also help dispatchers at the police department.
"We have emergency medical dispatchers that work within the police department, and [the levy] would enable us to not only hopefully add personnel but add equipment as well," Police Chief Tim Roddy told 21 News.
Roddy said they are looking to set the levy at 2.5 mills. This means households with a $100,000 property value would pay roughly 24 cents a day.
But before city council officially proposes the levy to the community, they want the fire and police chief to provide them with a cost breakdown that will show how the money would be used for each department.
City leaders are hoping to have the levy on the ballot during the primary election in May.
