Demo work begins at Shenango Valley Mall, leaders discuss impact of Sharon Regional
In the next three months the Shenango Valley mall in Hermitage will be reduced to rubble, and cleared to make room for the city's future.
"It's primed for redevelopment, and the developer plans to build individual buildings for some national brand restaurant, retail-oriented businesses.", said Mark Longietti, city director of community and business development.
The city also wants to purchase some of that acreage to put a green space in the center of it all.
"City also wants to put forward a city center concept. So we've been working closely with a developer to acquire some of the acreage to makes some outdoor community space with some amenities.", Longietti explained.
The former Pennsylvania State Representative has been instrumental throughout this transition, but also tells 21 News that he's keeping an eye on the situation down East State Street, where the fate of Sharon Regional hangs in the balance.
"Healthcare is critical--it's critical in terms of our servicing the people in our community. It's a big part of our economy and to attract people to move into the area and businesses.", added Longietti.
As the adage goes, hope is not a strategy. Longietti is on the front lines of trying to save the hospital.
"There is still an effort to do that we are apart of that effort to put some community together and work with Tenor Health to help rescue the hospital system."
Tenor Health group is asking community partners to come up $10 million dollars to help purchase the facility.
