2000: An outbreak of the flu has caused Park Vista retirement center in Youngstown and Salem Community Hospital to bar visitors, but area school attendance is returning to normal as is attendance at most industrial plants.

Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Michael Wherry sentences a 39-year-old Jackson Township man to one-to-two years in prison for crashing a modified racing lawnmower that he was driving while drunk. The man's 3-year-old son was thrown from the mower and suffered serious injuries.

Gary Kaatz, interim president and CEO of Forum Health, announced his resignation to become CEO of Rockford Health System in Rockford, Illinois. 

1985: An underground fire in an old dump in Union Township, Pa., fed by buried paint, tar, asphalt, and other building materials, was extinguished after two weeks by crews who dug as deep as 60 feet to reach the source of smoke and fumes, which had sent 28 people to the hospital.

History buffs in Salem are trying to save Liberty Hall at North Ellsworth Avenue and Second Street from the wrecker's ball. The 1840 building, used to shelter escaped slaves, got its name from Quakers.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino will be the "Man of the Year" at the ninth annual Sandalini's Sports Banquet in Niles on Feb. 6. Marino has attended the banquet six times, starting when he played at the University of Pittsburgh. 

1975: House burglaries in Boardman were up an alarming 92 percent in 1974 over 1973, says Police Chief Grant Hess.

Joanne Coughlin, a former Youngstown State University student who appeared in several plays at the Youngstown Playhouse and Trumbull New Theater, has disappeared, and foul play is feared. 

1950: Mill Creek Park commissioners file suit to shut down American Fire Clay Products' operations in Green and Beaver townships. The company's byproducts pollute streams and kill fish in the park. 

Youngstown traffic patrolmen are cracking down on jaywalkers. In 1949, fifteen of the city's traffic fatalities were pedestrians. 

The Dew Drop Inn, a notorious house of prostitution at 228 Mahoning Ave., Niles, is open for business as usual seven hours after a delegation of women asked Mayor Ray Hubbard to close it.
