A Campbell man was arrested over the weekend after police say he left his dog in a car for nearly four hours while drinking at a bar.

According to the report, police were called to a bar on Robinson Road just after 5:30 Sunday evening for an intoxicated man, identified as 72-year-old Peter Prato who was attempting to leave in his car.

Police say bar patrons were withholding Prato's keys from him in order to prevent him from leaving adding.

When police got to the scene, they saw Prato sitting in the car along with a dog sitting in the passenger seat. Police spoke to Prato and placed him under arrest. 

According to the report, Prado left the dog in the car the whole time he was at the bar, which was about four hours. Police say the dog was left in temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Prato and the dog were both taken to the Campbell Police Department with the dog being placed in a temporary kennel. Prato was taken to jail after he signed a seizure form for the dog.

Police say Prato refused to be breathalyzed.

A Campbell Municipal Court employee tells 21 News Prato is charged with OVI, as well as neglect of a companion animal. He is set to be arraigned Tuesday, January 7 at 9 a.m.
