The U.S. Army Crops of Engineers Pittsburgh District, alongside the Shenango River Watchers will host the fifth annual Eagle Fest at the Shenango River Lake Saturday, January 11.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at Chestnut Run Swim Beach on Sarnac Drive in Transfer. The event will start with a group welcome followed by presentations from the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Tamarack Wildlife with a Wings of Wonder program and other children's activities.

During those presentations, the winners will be announced for the first Eagle Fest Art Competition, which invited folks to submit photos and other artwork.

Winners will be announced in three different age groups, and those winners will have their art displayed at the fest for the very first time.

Scheduled events last until 2 p.m., but guests are welcome to stay longer to spot and photograph the eagles typically visible around the lake in January.

In addition, the event will include a food truck on site for the very first time with food and drinks available for purchase.

The event will serve as an opportunity to spot and learn about bald eagles, which have nested around the Shenango River Lake. Park rangers will be available to answer any questions and help guests find bald eagles.

According to a press release, when the lake freezes and ice forms, open water becomes prime fishing for bald eagles.

In the past, visitors have seen over 90 juvenile and adult bald eagles near Chestnut Run Swim Beach and the Route 18 access areas in one day.
