Shannon to play baseball for Penguins in 2025
Former UCF outfielder and current Youngstown State football student-athlete Brady Shannon has joined the Youngstown State baseball program for the upcoming 2025 season, YSU head coach Trevor Charpie announced on Friday.
Shannon, a native of Youngstown, becomes a two-sport student-athlete at YSU after also playing quarterback on the Penguins football team during the 2024 season. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound outfielder will be a redshirt sophomore in 2025 with two seasons of eligibility remaining on the diamond. Shannon appeared in three games on the football field during YSU's 2024 season, and he will remain a member of the football program as a dual-sport student-athlete.
Shannon returned to Youngstown after playing baseball at UCF during the 2023 season. He played in 25 games and made nine starts in the outfield as a true freshman for the Golden Knights. Shannon recorded seven hits including two home runs, four runs scored and five RBIs. He registered three RBIs in his collegiate debut against Siena, and he hit home runs in back-to-back games in his first two collegiate appearances. Shannon also went 4-4 with a home run, a stolen base and two RBIs on opening weekend against Siena in 2023.
Shannon was a four-year letterwinner and three-sport athlete in football, baseball and basketball at nearby Ursuline High School in Youngstown. He played baseball for the Fighting Irish under Head Coach Paul Kempe. Shannon was ranked as the No. 4 outfielder and the No. 40 overall player in the state of Ohio for the class of 2022 by Perfect Game. He batted .300 with three home runs as a senior, and he played summer/travel ball for Team Ohio Pro Select.
Shannon was rated as a three-star prospect on the football field by 247sports.com as a two-time All-Ohio Division IV selection at quarterback. He earned second-team honors as a senior and honorable-mention accolades as a junior. Shannon passed for 2,829 yards and 29 touchdowns as a senior while also rushing for 832 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2021, he led the Irish to their first state title game appearance since 2010, completing 15 passes and throwing two touchdown tosses in the title game. Shannon set school records for career passing yards and touchdowns while playing football for Head Coach Dan Reardon.
