Officials in Champion Township will be meeting next week to discuss a new police levy for the township.

Township Trustee Chairman Rex Fee tells 21 News the exact milage for the levy and cost to taxpayers has not been determined yet, but will be discussed at a meeting Monday, January 6.

Fee says this levy is needed to keep up with rising costs due to inflation over the past few years with Fee adding that the police department is "treading water" on its current revenue.

Should the levy fail to pass, Fee says while the police department wouldn't be under immediate threat of closure, cost cutting measures such as layoffs will likely need to happen.

The legislation would need to go through two readings. The first reading will take place about a week and a half after the millage discussion, and the second will take place February 3.
