Lettau, pastor; Robert Morrison, president of the St. Edward's Catholic Youth Organization; and Mary Sylak, president of the St. Edward's Sodality. At right, the Rev. William Smaltz, assistant pastor. The plaque named 44 parishioners in the service, with space available for others to come.

2000: Thousands of tires accumulated over 20 years on an abandoned Ellsworth Township site will be ground up by the Mahoning County solid waste management district and used as backfill on construction projects.
Niles Police Chief Bruce Simeone's proposal to have an outside agency such as the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigate accidents involving city police vehicles is put on hold after the unions representing patrolmen and ranking officers object.
State Auditor Jim Petro says that Youngstown, which has emerged from fiscal watch, must do more to control spending or risk a return to state oversight.
1985: Youngstown Mayor Patrick Ungaro says the cost of a comprehensive study of Youngstown's water system will be paid for with a special assessment placed on all users in the city and the suburbs over the objection of some suburban communities. Ungaro is denying any extension of service until the study is completed and a lawsuit challenging the city's 40 percent surcharge on suburban sales is settled.
Mahoning County Commissioners accept the resignation of Sheriff James A. Traficant on the day he is sworn in to Congress. Sheriff-elect Edward Nemeth is named to fill out the few days remaining in Traficant's term.
A man apprehended Christmas Eve while stealing seven suits valued at $130 each from Sears at the Eastwood Mall is sentenced by Municipal Court Judge Charles Zubyk to five months in jail and credited with 10 days served while awaiting his court date.
1975: Canfield police corner and arrest a Canfield youth in Saw Mill Run Road after he fled a minor accident and allegedly fired bullets at police.
Atty. Julius Zlotnick is appointed a Mahoning County judge to succeed Charles Bannon, who took a seat on Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Three Youngstown area Ursuline nuns mark their silver jubilees: Sister Janet Elaine Walsh, Sister Gertrude Paris and Sister Teresa Winsen.
1950: Youngstown registers the warmest January 3rd in 33 years when the mercury hits 60 degrees at noon.
