A man in Austintown was taken to the hospital just after the clock struck midnight New Year's Day following a firework accident.

Austintown Fire Chief Dave Schertzer tells 21 News the incident happened on the 200 Block of South Yorkshire Boulevard just after midnight when a firework exploded in the man's hand.

Schertzer says the man originally requested an ambulance, but that requested was canceled after someone at the scene drove him to the hospital instead.

Because of this, no fire, EMS or police crews showed up to the scene.

The man's condition is unknown.
