Mercer County may see higher natural gas bills
The National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation announced that customers may be seeing gas bill changes in the upcoming year in its "Purchased Gas Cost Filing" December 31.
According to the release, the filing includes projected numbers of gas supplies that National Fuel Gas intends to purchase and deliver to customers between August 1, 2025 and July 31, 2026.
If the projected numbers are approved, customers with an annual usage of 96,500 cubic feet would see an increase from $73.10 per month to $89.59 starting August 1, 2025.
Customers are advised by National Fuel Gas Distribution that these numbers are projected and must be reviewed and approved before becoming effective.
Effective January 1, 2025, customers will see a 17 cent monthly charge to support a Distribution System Improvement Charge. This will continue through March, 2025.
The Distribution System Improvement Charge will be used to improve and replace utility infrastructure, providing customers with a safer system of service and reliability.
The proposed increase to bills is reportedly in association with natural gas prices projected to be higher in the coming year than 2024.
The New York Mercantile Exchange natural gas market prices are projected to be above $4.00 per MMBtu (Metric Million British Thermal Unit) during 2025's winter. Market prices at the end of November, 2024 had averaged about $3.03 per MMBtu.
