New prosecutor sworn in at Mahoning County courthouse
On Monday, Lynn Maro took her oath of office as the new Mahoning County prosecutor.
Judge John Durkin opened the ceremony with brief remarks, acknowledging Maro's dedication to the community and the significance of her new role.
During the ceremony, Maro introduced three new staff members who will take on leadership roles during her first term.
John Juhasz was introduced as the chief of the criminal division, Jennifer Robbins will lead the juvenile division, and Kathi McNabb Welsh will head the civil division of the prosecutor's office.
Maro told 21 News that she has full confidence in her staff selections.
"We have sat and talked about the vision for the office and they are 150% on board with that vision," Maro said.
The long time criminal defense attorney said her vison is one that will ensure consistency and accuracy.
"We've got the paperwork designed and developed to start a database to track whether there's forensic evidence, whether there's eyewitness testimony, and what the reductions are for plea bargaining, so there will be more consistency," Maro said.
Maro's top priority during her tenure is to increase the conviction rate and decrease the dismissal rate for murder cases in the Mahoning County.
"What I really want to see is better coordination up front with law enforcement, so that before the charges are filed, we know what the case really should look like, so we don't have to dismiss down the road. And use the grand jury to make sure the evidence we have is solid, reliable evidence that is good enough to get a conviction from," Maro said.
