The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) of Northeast Ohio announced its new program to help Trumbull County residents experiencing homelessness by providing them with a transforming winter coat December 30.

Thirty five coats were initially purchased by SVdP, but with community support and donations, SVdP would be able to purchase and distribute more coats.

The winter coat is developed by Empowerment Plan and are called EMPWR coats. The coats are able to provide warmth and protection in temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

During the day, it can be used as a winter coat. When needed, it can transform into a fully functional sleeping bag. It can also roll up into an over-the-shoulder pack to make it easy to transport.

In addition to the coats that will be distributed, individuals will also receive personal care kits that include a new pair of Bombas socks, hats, gloves, toiletries and other items.
