1999: Gordon Ellis, 38, is sworn in as chief of the Austintown Police Department, succeeding John Cannon, chief since 1987, who is retiring.

Warren Mayor Hank Angelo will officiate when six couples are married or renew their wedding vows on New Year's Eve, the last day of the century.

WCI Steel in Warren announces that a drop in earnings means the company's 2,000 members of USW Local 1375 will not be receiving profit-sharing bonuses at year's end or in February. 

1984: A collision between a van and a bus operated by the Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation at Newton Road and Route 18 in Milton Township kills a woman and injures the driver, an aide, and seven passengers on the bus. Killed was the van driver, Linda Winger, 24, of North Jackson.

Census figures for 1984 show that Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan gained population while West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Wyoming saw declines. Previously, high growth rates in Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado slowed perceptibly.

Judges William J. Houser and Clyde Osborne administered the oath of office to former Youngstown Mayor Jack C. Hunter, elected to the State Board of Education, and County Prosecutor Gary Van Brocklin, both Republicans. 

1974: A 27-year-old Midland, Pa., patrolman, James DiTullio, is in fair condition after being shot in the chest following an altercation at a basketball game. His 19-year-old assailant is under arrest.

"The Nutcracker" ballet, Youngstown Symphony Society's traditional yuletide gift to the community, delight 1,800 adults and youngsters at Powers Auditorium.

Amy Vanderbilt, the final arbiter of social etiquette for millions of Americans, dies after falling from a second-story window of her Manhattan townhouse. 

1949: For the first time in over a decade, Mahoning County Commissioners must use the general fund for at least $165,000 to support the welfare cost.

Three bandits severely beat and then robbed Walter Algoe, 52, a Youngstown Municipal Railway Co. bus driver. They escape with $40.

Jacque Mercer, Miss America of 1949, marries her high school sweetheart. Pageant directors will decide whether she must give up her title.
