Boardman Police investigating after man dresses up as FedEx worker in fraud scheme
Police in Boardman are investigating after a woman reported a fraud scheme involving a suspect dressed as a FedEx employee.
According to the report, police received a call on Monday, December 23 about a theft and identity fraud scheme. The woman told police she got a phone call on November 29 from someone claiming to work for the fraud department at AT&T.
Police say this caller told her someone from either Maryland or Delaware hacked her AT&T account and ordered a new iPhone, as well as a Bluetooth headset.
A few days later, police say the woman received a package containing the iPhone and was asked to sign for it.
About 10 minutes later, police say the woman received a call from the same person as before telling her the delivery was an accident and that someone from FedEx would be coming to her house to pick up the iPhone.
Police say shortly after this, a man showed up at her house claiming to work for FedEx telling her he was there to pick up the package.
The woman told police she was suspicious of this because there was no FedEx truck parked at the home, but there was a red four-door sedan in her driveway with someone else inside.
Police say when the woman asked for a receipt since she had to sign for the package, the man unzipped his jacket to show her that he was wearing a FedEx shirt.
The man told the woman he knows of a scam going on, but reassured her he was going to return the package. Police say the woman gave the man the package and he left.
Eventually, the woman checked her AT&T account and saw she was charged $33.34 for the iPhone with payments scheduled for the end of each month.
An employee at a local AT&T store told the woman this was most likely a scam.
Police say they do have two persons of interest in this case, but are not releasing the names of those suspects at this time.
