21 WFMJ archives  / December  18, 1994 | Quarterback Mark Brungard rushed 38 yards for a second-quarter touchdown that put Youngstown State University permanently ahead in its 28-14 win over Boise State 30 years ago in Huntington, W. Va.  The win gave Penguins Coach Jim Tressel and Brungard their second consecutive national championship in NCAA Division 1-AA.

1999: Warren's three police dogs, Skylar, Berry, and Karr, will be sold to their handlers, Officers Wayne Mackey, Michael Merritt, and Mike Krafcik, for $1 as the city abandons its police dog program as part of a massive budget cuts.

Niles Patrolman Michael Wilson is named the city's first school resource officer. He will be responsible for Niles McKinley High School, the district's five elementary schools, and Edison Junior High. 

Young perspective drivers and their parents are swarming Pennsylvania driver's license centers to beat a Dec. 22 deadline when more stringent driver education requirements go into effect. 


1984: Bernie Kosar, star quarterback of the University of Miami and former Boardman High standout, is named Northeastern Ohio's Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Sports Media Association of Cleveland. 

Niles City Council approved issuing $500,000 in industrial revenue bonds for the expansion of Metal Products Co., which will create 20 to 25 jobs. 

U.S. Steel Corp., the nation's No. 1 steel producer, has filed 28 anti-dumping petitions with the U.S. Department of Commerce and International Trade Commission against eight nations. 

 
1974: The Youngstown Civil Service Commission unanimously turns down reinstatement requests from three former police officers who were fired after being convicted of petty larceny. 

The Youngstown and Boardman fire departments host the local premiere of "The Towering Inferno" at Southern Park Cinema. Proceeds go toward the education of the children of firemen who died in the line of duty. 

Ralph Goldston, a former Youngstown State University star who went on to play professional football, most recently with the Chicago Bears, will speak at the McGuffey Centre's 13th annual booster club banquet. 


1949: Rain-weakened ice gives way under two Warren youths on a pond on S. Pine Avenue. John Bansky, 15, and James Rowan, 13, drowned in 10 feet of water. 

The Youngstown Police Department will begin fingerprinting all applicants for taxi licenses and conducting background checks to prevent the issuance of licenses to men with criminal records.

The Youngstown Post Office sets a record for one day's mail handling, processing 900,000 pieces.
