Brookfield Police: Unexpected deliveries may contain codes to drain your bank account
The Brookfield Township Police Department is warning residents to be aware of a scam involving unexpected packages delivered to their homes.
In this so-called “brushing” scam, victims receive unexpected packages containing items they did not order, such as jewelry, electronics, or other small gifts. These packages typically lack sender information and may not be from a recognizable retailer.
The danger lies within a QR code in a package that purports to reveal the sender. Instead, scanning this code grants scammers access to the victim's phone, allowing them to steal personal and financial information.
Scammers can drain bank accounts and cause significant financial harm, according to police.
The Brookfield Township Police Department advises residents to:
Never scan unknown QR codes: Avoid scanning any QR code found within a suspicious package.
Inform family and friends: Share this information with loved ones to raise awareness about the scam.
