Suspect still in hospital after standoff in Masury, charged with murder
One person was taken into custody by Brookfield Police following an almost 24 hour standoff in Masury.
57-year-old Andrew Reedy surrendered to police around 7:20 a.m. Saturday morning.
On Friday, December 20, at approximately 9:52 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home on Lucy Street for a call of a unwanted person. On the call Reedy’s longtime girlfriend, Jane Payton, told the dispatchers Reedy was trying the force his way into the home and asked them to send police officers.
“I just had my boyfriend evicted, ex boyfriend evicted, and he's here at my house…” Payton said. “They came and removed him today and he is back here on my property."
While Payton is on the phone, a man is heard in the background presumed to be Reedy.
“Oh yes, he is inside my house,” Payton said.
“I'm just getting my wallet,” the man said.
Once on scene, officers tried to contact the caller, but were unsuccessful.
They were able to contact Reedy, and after speaking with him, forced entry into the home where they found 57-year-old Jayne Payton, deceased from a gunshot wound.
Officers began to check the rest of the home when they heard a firearm discharge from the second floor, causing them to back out and await backup.
Police from several departments including Brookfield Police, Hubbard and Vienna Township surrounded the house with swat members and an armored van. Payton's family members waited in the street outside after they got the news that their sister had been killed. Negotiators shouted over a loudspeaker asking Reedy to answer his phone and to come out the back door with his hands up.
During negotiations, officers learned that Reedy had a gunshot injury on his face, which police believe was self-inflicted.
Reedy was taken a hospital and evaluated for his gunshot wound. He is facing one charge of murder.
Investigators are still piecing together how this all escalated, but court records show Reedy had had several probation violations since an OVI charge in November of 2023. That was pleaded down, but warrants had to be issued several times for missed court appearances.
As of Monday morning, Reedy is still in the hospital under 24 hour police supervision. He will be arraigned on the murder charge when he is medically cleared.
