Student arrested in connection with shooting stemming from fight at school
A juvenile suspect has been arrested following a shooting that police say stemmed from a fight at school earlier in the day.
According to a press release from YPD, a 15-year-old male was arrested on Thursday and charged with attempted murder. He was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
The shooting happened Tuesday, December 17 on the 2700 Block of South Avenue and involved two 15-year-old males who police confirmed to be students at Woodrow Wilson Alternative School.
Following the shooting, detectives immediately began canvasing neighborhoods, spoke with witnesses on the matter and eventually developed a suspect.
That suspect was taken into custody on Thursday, December 19 around noon.
Police believe the shooting to have stemmed from a fight that began at the school, but a spokesperson for the Youngstown City School District told 21 News they do not believe the student ever had a gun on school grounds.
An arraignment date has not been set for the student at this time. We will update this story with arraignment information once it is available.
