The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations has released its report on a fatal officer-involved shooting in Youngstown from June of 2024.

The shooting happened on the 100 Block of South Maryland Avenue and stemmed from a domestic violence incident involving a suspect identified as Mathue O'Malley.

According to BCI's report, the incident began when O'Malley and his girlfriend got into an argument, which eventually led to O'Malley telling her the two would stay in the attic all night long while making threatening gestures at her.

Investigators say that's when O'Malley's girlfriend tried to call 911 from her cell phone, but O'Malley hung up and took the phone away from her as soon as it started ringing.

Officers with the Youngstown Police Department responded to the 911 hang-up. According to the report, O'Malley ran into the bedroom closet and grabbed a handgun telling his girlfriend not to open the door.

Investigators say O'Malley's girlfriend told officers "He has a gun on my mom." That's when police entered the home and shots began to ring out.

According to the report, O'Malley was then seen lying on the floor. Witnesses were unsure if he was shot by police or if he had shot himself. One victim in the house was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh.

O'Malley was also taken to an ambulance, but ultimately died of his injuries.

Following the shooting, a grand jury declined to indict the officer involved in the shooting clearing him of any criminal charges.
