Year in Review - June: Two local softball teams win state; Norfolk Southern settlement; and priest resignation
2024 has been a busy news year around the Mahoning and Shenago valleys.
From December 20 through New Year's Eve, 21 News will share a recap of one month per day of some of the interesting news events that happened in 2024. Here are some of the top stories from June.

June 4
Norfolk Southern sends out tens of thousands of settlement letters
People who live within 20 miles of the East Palestine train disaster begin receiving letters on how to move forward to claim their share of a $600 million settlement. See the full story here.

Engineers begin investigation into Realty Building
Three structural engineers begin their inspection of the blast-damaged Realty Building to see if it can be rehabilitated. A recommendation would later be made to evacuate buildings within 210 feet of the building. See the full story here.

131 shots fired as 18-year-old woman is killed, another injured on Youngstown’s Southside
Thiel College student Te’nya McKinley is killed in a shooting along Glenwood and Sherwood Avenues. Police said she was an innocent bystander in the shooting. See the full story here.
June 13
Youngstown man identified after deadly officer-involved shooting
Mathue O’Malley is shot and killed by a Youngstown Police officer after a report of a domestic violence situation along South Maryland Avenue. The officer was later cleared of any wrongdoing in December. See the full story here.
June 14
Anti-violence activist found dead in car on Youngstown’s westside
Prominent anti-violence activist William “Shimmie” Miller is found dead from a gunshot wound in a car near the intersection of Steel Street and Salt Springs Road. Miller had troubles with the law in the past and turned his life around, serving as a mentor to young people. See the full story here.

Rite Aid closes stores in Mahoning Valley
Rite Aid closed stores across the Valley including in Alliance, Austintown, Howland, New Castle and Youngstown. See the full story here.
June 23
Priest resignation brings shock and sadness to some in the Valley
Mike Swierz, priest at St. Patrick Church in Hubbard, resigns amid an investigation. He was later deemed unsuitable for ministry and a Diocese investigation revealed a “disturbing pattern of behavior including serious boundary violations with minors, manipulation and abuse of power.” See the full story here.

Last suspect in Chassidy Broadstone death sentenced to life on aggravated murder, arson charges
Patricia Zarlingo, 31, pleads guilty to murder and arson charges and is sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Brendan Daviduk and Zackary Gurd also pleaded guilty to their role in the crime. See the full story here.
