Student detained after rumors of gun inside MCCTC Wednesday
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center learned of a potential threat on Wednesday involving a student with an alleged gun onto school grounds.
MCCTC Superintendent John Zehentbauer told 21 News that the school had learned of the rumor circulating around noon and had notified the Canfield Police Department, which included the K9 unit, and followed their recommendations. Out of an abundance of caution, several labs were searched, several students were interviewed, and the student in question was detained.
The student has been removed from the school during the investigation.
Zehentbauer said, "Please know that we take all concerns about safety with the utmost seriousness and act immediately to ensure the well-being of our students and staff."
The school was not placed into locked down since the student in question was detained.
Zehentbauer said there is no threat to the students or staff at the school at this time.
"We understand that such situations can cause concern, and we want to reassure you that we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. We appreciate the partnership of the Canfield Police Department and the cooperation of everyone involved in resolving this matter swiftly and thoroughly," Zehentbauer added.
Zehentbauer said anyone with concerns should reach out to him or school administrators.
