Sharon Regional Medical Center is set to close its doors on Jan. 6 and the city manager Bob Fiscus, hopes a buyer will step up before that day.

However, business health expert and investigations editor for the American Prospect, Maureen Tkacik said it is more likely for the attorney general to provide assistance than a privately owned company.

"It is possible that the attorney general, having dealt with the parallel situation, has some tricks up its sleeve. And in order to keep [Sharon Regional Medical Center] alive, it will need more capital. And that is not likely to come from private sources," Tkacik told 21 News.

Tkacik said the property holds significant value and losing it would impact the community. But in the chance that another company places an offer, she is concerned that another entity could "run [the hospital] deeper into the ground."

Tkacik also believes the presence of UPMC hospitals also pose a threat to saving Sharon Regional Hospital.

"UPMC is an incredibly powerful medical monopoly in that area," the business health expert said.
