Sharon Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is set to close January 6, 2025, leaving a void for healthcare in Mercer County.

Members of the community and hospital employees are worried about the pending closure.

Robert Fiscus, Sharon's city manager, said despite the closing date, they are still looking for a potential buyer in the hopes of keeping the hospital's doors open.

“I think we are all a bit disappointed. I know that everyone was. It’s invested a lot of time and energy. And making sure we have a sustainable healthcare system that prospers,” said Fiscus. “We’re continuing to have discussions and to seek out other entities or other providers that may have an interest to come to Sharon. I think there are still possibilities. You know we’re still remaining optimistic that the doors will never actually close.”

One employee who worked at Sharon Regional for 27 years is devastated that her employer could be closing in just a few weeks.

“It's heartbreaking for all of us. We've all become a family. It is just so disheartening to just know that this hospital could potentially close and the influx that it represents for the community,” said Angela Canzonetta, registered nurse at Sharon Regional Medical Center

But the community is not giving up hope. Bob Rogalski, president of Sharon Regional Medical Center, said if another operator steps up, they can possibly keep the doors open.

Fiscus is vetting and meeting with groups interested in buying SRMC. Because of the interest in the hospital, he is optimistic about the hospital staying open.

“I can't imagine what the employees are going through and everyone up there that's invested and are so dedicated to serving their patients. You know, we feel for them. If there's any other message we can get to them, you know, we're not giving up,” said Fiscus.

Even though there is hope, concerns still remain.

“UPMC, I think, is the other hospital that is in the area. I don't think they can handle the influx of patients. The community really needs this hospital to stay open,” said Canzonetta.

Over 700 people work at the SRMC. The community gathering at SRMC and holding a Candlelight Vigil to honor the hospital Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
