Several Valley law enforcement agencies receive traffic safety improvement grants
Several law enforcement agencies in several Mahoning Valley communities have received grant funding to improve traffic safety in their communities.
This funding is part of $24 million from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) for statewide programming to improve traffic safety and reduce fatal crashes throughout Ohio.
The funding can be used in a variety of ways including impaired driving and selective traffic enforcement, summer overtime hours (Summer Holiday Enforcement Program) and using local coalitions to deliver traffic safety messages and programs throughout the year (Safe Communities programs).
Below is a list of agencies that received funding and what that funding will be used for.
MAHONING COUNTY:
- Mahoning County Sheriff's Office ($94,147.23 for impaired driving and selective traffic enforcement and $55,000 for Safe Communities programs)
- Youngstown Police Department ($51,073.14 for impaired driving and selective traffic enforcement)
- Canfield Police Department ($250,000 for the Mahoning County OVI Task Force)
- Beaver Township Police Department ($4,537.16 for the Summer Holiday Enforcement Program)
TRUMBULL COUNTY:
- Trumbull County Sheriff's Office ($63,513.06 for impaired driving and selective traffic enforcement)
- Warren Police Department ($46,265.62 for impaired driving and selective traffic enforcement and $208,915.28 for the Trumbull County OVI Task Force)
- Fowler Township Police Department ($55,000 for Safe Communities progams)
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is quoted in a press release saying these grants will support ongoing efforts to save lives and reduce injuries and fatalities on the road.
"From raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving to increasing enforcement to take impaired drivers off the streets, these programs will contribute to making the roads safer for everyone," DeWine said.
