A Youngstown woman has been arrested for child endangering after her one-year-old son was scalded by hot water over nearly half of his body.
Twenty-year-old A’Lazsia Underwood was booked into Mahoning County Jail Friday following her arrest in Liberty.
Although the arrest warrant wasn’t issued until earlier this month, the charge stems from an incident at a West Warren Avenue Home in July.
According to a police report, family members found Underwood’s one year old son sitting on a sink with hot water running over his legs. At the time, no one could tell police how the child got on the sink and who turned on the faucet.
Police say the water was so hot, the child was burned from his waist down, and shreds of skin were found in the sink.
The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital where doctors reported that the child had second degree burns over 40% of his body.
Another court hearing is scheduled for Underwood later this month.
Police who investigated the incident reported that the thermostat on the water heater was turned to “Hot”.
Although some manufacturers set water heater thermostats at 140ºF, the U.S. Department of Energy says most households usually only require them to be set at 120ºF, which in addition to slowing mineral buildup and corrosion in your water heater and pipes, it reduces the risks of scalding.
