Stanley is recalling about 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs sold in the United States due to a burn hazard.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The lid threads on the mugs can shrink when exposed to heat and tightening, causing the lid to detach and potentially scald users.

The recall involves all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold nationwide. The affected mugs come in 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes and various colors, including white, black, and green. They have a polypropylene lid and the Stanley logo on the front and bottom.

Consumers can identify if their mug is part of the recall by checking the product identification number printed on the bottom. Specific identification numbers for recalled models are listed below:

Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the U.S., of the recalled mugs' lids detaching during use. These incidents resulted in 38 burn injuries worldwide, with two occurring in the U.S. Eleven consumers globally required medical attention.

The mugs were sold at major retailers like Amazon.com, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Target, both online and in stores, from June 2016 through December 2024. The price ranged from $20 to $50 depending on the model.

CPSC and Stanley urge consumers to immediately stop using the recalled travel mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid, including shipping.
