999: David Ditzler, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, says a meeting of precinct committeemen will be called to change the bylaws to allow candidate endorsements in primary elections, including the 17th District congressional race. 

Youngstown State University rebounds from a 17-3 deficit to beat Florida A&M, 27-24, sending the Penguins to Chattanooga to play in their fifth Division 1-AA  national championship game. 

Warren Fire Chief Jay Mulligan marches with the Cleveland Memorial Firefighters Pipe and Drum Corps at the services honoring six Worcester, Mass., firefighters who died in a warehouse blaze. 

 

1984: Walter Paulo, a former state representative and Isaly Dairy Co. executive, dies of heart failure in North Side Hospital at 82. 

Gov. Richard Celeste names Thomas Chema, director of the Ohio Lottery, to succeed Michael Del Bane as chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. 

Mill Creek Park's naturalist Bill Whitehouse says people feeding ducks through "misguided kindness" are causing a problem at the Lily Pond. The ducks are not native to the park; most were Easter chicks dropped off at the park after they stopped being cute. Some of the ducks were attacked by dogs in the park. 

  

1974: Cleveland Beasley, 63, owner of a Pine Avenue pool hall, is found shot to death in his car at a Warren intersection. Police Chief Jack Gardner says robbery is the apparent motive because Beasley was known to carry large amounts of cash. 

Don Baker, chairman of the Youngstown Chapter of the Governor's Subcommittee for Barrier-Free Architecture, presents a plaque to the Cafaro Corp. recognizing the company's efforts to make the Eastwood Mall and McGuffey Plaza accessible to the handicapped. 

President Ford will nominate Attorney General William Saxbe of Ohio as ambassador to India, replacing Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York.

 

1949: Youngstown police raid a dice game in the basement of 521 Market St., arresting five people on gambling charges. 

The Cleveland Browns win the All-American Conference for the fourth straight year, defeating San Francisco, 21-7, before 22,550 fans in Cleveland. Coach Paul Brown says he may not field a team next year if the All-American clubs don't get a fair shake in the merger with the National League. 

The Niles Community Players hold their annual Christmas Party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Jones on Robbins Avenue.
