999: The former Wean United plant at the northwest corner of the Market Street Bridge, where 1,300 people once worked, is being razed by its present owners, MBM Realty of Canfield.

Warren Police Chief Albert Timko says the city's police canine unit will be dissolved on Jan. 1 due to a lack of funds. About 75 employees, including 19 in the police department, will be laid off that day.

Delphi Automotive Systems in Warren has won a new business contract to produce wiring harnesses for Volvo Trucks North America. 

1984: A year after Gov. Richard Celeste described Ohio as the Rust Bowl when he was inaugurated, efforts to rebuild the state's economy are hampered by high unemployment, exiting industries, and a poor image.

Councilman Pete Starks and law director William Higgins defend Starks' call for a closed council session to discuss compensatory time payments for some city employees by broadly suggesting that the result of the talks could result in legal action.

The East Ohio Gas Co. and the Salvation Army announced a $500,000 energy assistance fund to help gas customers avoid shutoffs during the next two winters. 

1974: Blue Cross of Eastern Ohio in Youngstown will merge with Cincinnati-based Blue Cross of Southwest Ohio.

Two Akron men are arrested in Farrell on charges of robbery of the First National Bank of Mercer's Broadway branch. Nathan H. Darsky, 92, founder of Golden Age Beverage Co. in Youngstown 60 years ago, dies in Miami Beach. He arrived in Youngstown in 1910 as a penniless Russian immigrant. 

1949: Rayen School students marked the 50th anniversary of the school's founding with a half-hour broadcast on radio station WFMJ.

A National Safety Council survey says Youngstown traffic is among the most dangerous in the nation and among cities with 100,000 to 200,000 residents, with 34 fatalities. 

Youngstown Postmaster John E. Doyle says people who want their out-of-town Christmas packages to arrive on time have three days to get to the post office. Otherwise, he suggests using the new air parcel post service.
