Penguin City Brewing Company seeks 75% tax break from city
Penguin City Brewing Company located in downtown Youngstown is requesting a 75% tax break from the city. This a request being made through the city's Business Park Incentives program.
Earlier this year the company was awarded $700,000 through capital funds that were approved by Governor Mike DeWine. Penguin City co-owner, Aspasia Lyras told 21 News that those specific funds will be used for upgrades to the building.
"The $700,000 is going to go to projects that were unfinished, making things more ADA accessible, new equipment, insulation, [and] things like that," Lyras said.
The upgrades will also include the construction of new restrooms for their banquet area in the back of the warehouse.
Lyras said since they already have the funds to support the expansion project, the 10-year tax break would help them increase their revenue and hire at least six more people. That is, if city council approves their request for the tax break.
The owners said if all goes according to plan, their expansion project would be complete sometime in the summer of 2025.
