Emergency crews fought to extinguish a fire on a train that was passing through Salem Sunday afternoon.

The city's fire department shared images of that effort on West Pershing Street to their Facebook page.

The fire started in the engine compartment of the train. A Norfolk Southern train car suffered smoke and burn damage.

According to Salem Fire, the train was not hauling any cargo or chemicals at the time. The department did call in some off-duty firefighters, as a precaution.
