Bennett, a 17-year-old Ursuline High student, was crowned queen of the Junior Civic League's Cinderella Ball at Mr. Anthony's by the 1983 queen, Linda D. Johnson of Campbell. Althea L. Forest of the Rayen School and Robin D. Coney of Woodrow Wilson were court members. Scholarship winners announced at the ball 40 years ago were Miss Johnson, Lewis Macklin, Lori Williams, Pamela Burton, and Christine Adger.

1999: Eighty-five percent of the workers at the Lordstown Assembly Plant vote to strike rather than sign General Motors' latest contract offer because they want assurances that more workers will be hired. Plant Manager Herman Maass says a strike would endanger the plant's future.
Atty Don L. Hanni Jr., former chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, says that if his son, Don L. Hanni III, resigns from the Youngstown school board, he may make a bid to replace him.
Dressed as Darth Vader, James B. Green, general chairman of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way, announced at a Star Wars-themed breakfast meeting attended by 250 that the campaign had reached its goal of $3.15 million.

A 28-year-old Youngstown Air Force reservist is critically injured in a flash fire in the fuel lab at the Air Force Reserve Base at Youngstown Municipal Airport.
Trailing the Cleveland Browns 17-10 with less than a minute to go, the Cincinnati Bengals blocked a Browns punt, recovered the ball, and scored a tying touchdown. The Bengals then won the game with a field goal in overtime, keeping their hopes for a division title alive.
1974: Ohio Edison Co. is making a valiant effort to restore power to thousands of Youngstown district homes two days after a winter storm struck.
John Henry Ziegler of Warren Harding is named the Associated Press top back on the Ohio Class AAA all-state high school football team. During Harding's state championship season, Ziegler broke most of the Harding running records that Paul Warfield of the Miami Dolphins had set.
Archie Griffin, Ohio State's tailback who weaved his way to a national rushing record, is named the Heisman Trophy winner.
1949: Work begins on the new $300,000 Manos Theater on Columbiana's Public Square. The theater will front on Main Street and have a porcelain enamel facade.
The Rt. Rev. Nelson M. Burroughs, the new bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Ohio, officiates at Holy Communion at St. John's Episcopal Church in Youngstown.
