1999: At an open house of the Youngstown State University Metro College in Southwoods Commons in Boardman, people are told that associate and bachelor degrees and continuing education courses are more accessible than ever. 

A little more than two months after opening, a museum in Salem honoring native son artist Charles Burchfield is reducing its hours and offering tours by appointment only. 

Former Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has sold his house in Southington Township in Trumbull County to a Stark County video marketer. The 25,000-square-foot home, where Tyson once controversially kept a tiger, sold for $1.3 million. 

 

1984: David Engler of Austintown, a third-year law student at Case Western Reserve Law School, is leading the resurrection of the Mahoning County Young Democrats Club to demonstrate the group's unhappiness with the Mahoning County Democratic Party and its leader, Don L. Hanni Jr. 

Doug Flutie of Boston College captures the Heisman Trophy,  the first quarterback to win since 1971. Boardman's Bernie Kosar, a sophomore quarterback at Miami, is fourth in balloting. 

Struthers and Lowellville are vying to provide fire protection to the isolated North Hill section of Poland Township. 

 

1974: A wild late-autumn storm accompanied by thunder dumps 8 to 12 inches of heavy wet snow on the Youngstown area, closing all schools and some businesses and industries. 

The four-day Thanksgiving holiday ends with a highway death toll of 435.

The Cleveland Browns beat San Francisco 7-0, playing through sleet and snow before 24,559 fans who braved the storm.

 

1949: C.G. Watson, president of the Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co., is elected president of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce. 

One of the worst droughts in years cuts the Mahoning Valley's supply of stored water, both industrial and domestic, to one of the lowest levels in years. The shortage will affect both industry and agriculture.
