As wintry forecast lingers, ODOT reminds commuters what to do before heavy snowfall
Winter weather is upon us and we expect to see more of it as the winter season officially approaches. While we hear safe driving reminders annually, preventable crashes happen every year in dangerous road conditions.
Ohio Department of Transportation District 4 said the Valley's candy coat of snow this Thanksgiving is a good reminder to be vigilant and mindful when there's snow and ice during the busy holiday season.
ODOT has done its part by prepping trucks and equipment ahead of time, but drivers need to remember to do their part when snow is coming, such as leaving a half hour early so that drivers can focus on being safe rather than just being on time.
"You do not want to be in a rush when snow is coming down more than an inch an hour," Public Information Officer of ODOT District 4, Ray Marsch, said.
If you see the plow trucks during your commute, it's vital to leave them enough room so they can focus and clear the road safely.
"...At least two to three car lengths in between yourself and our snow plow," Marsch said, "because when there is inclement weather, stopping distance is very limited."
Before heavier snowfall arrives, it's important that your car is in good shape by having regular maintenance and ensuring you're up to date on your routine oil changes.
It's best practice to check your tires every winter, to make sure the tires have the right amount of tread to stop correctly.
Marsch said it's also best to keep the car stocked, just in case.
"Just in case you run into a road closure and you might be stuck there for an extended period of time," he said, "So want blankets, gloves, hand heaters..."
He adds that OHGo.com is a helpful online tool because it allows you to access real-time local road conditions before you head out.
"It has live traffic cameras that can show your commute to and from work," he said, "That is a great resource."
Marsch also reminds Valley drivers it's imperative to make time to grab brush and scraper on snowy mornings to always remove snow properly off your entire car to avoid a dangerous situation.
