83-year-old Austintown man arrested for bank robbery apologizes for actions and wants support
Last Wednesday, 83-year-old Austintown Veteran, Forrest Lytell, was arrested for robbing a PNC bank on Mahoning Avenue.
Lytell said he never imagined he would rob a bank, but hit a breaking point after dealing with finances, stress and a lack of support as his wife of 47 years was under medical care for a year away from home, recovering from surgeries.
Police said they arrested him after they traced the money to his location since the teller handed him cash with a tracker ID.
"I've been living in Austintown for over 40 years," he said, "I have a clean record. I never, never, never even shopped lifted or nothing."
Lytell said he regrets his actions, is sorry and wants support.
"I was trying to find some help to maybe ease things at home and ease things around me," he said.
His wife said she was shocked when she learned what happened and feels her husband was overwhelmed.
"I couldn't believe it," she said, "I love him with every bit of my being."
Lytell's attorney Tony Meranto said his goal is to get Lytell into the Honors court and hopes the charges can be dropped, as Lytell's wife also said he has been diagnosed with dementia.
Meranto said Lytell had no weapons and showed no signs of violence and hopes to get him connected to veteran's services.
