An 18-year-old Youngstown man has been charged with 44 felony counts of attempted rape and sexual contact with a minor.

Struthers police were called on October 10 to a Struthers home to investigate claims of a child that had been allegedly raped between February 1, 2020, through December 31, 2022, when the child was approximately 4 to 5 years old.

Charles Martin, 18, was arrested on Wednesday by Struthers police and is now facing 44 felony counts and one misdemeanor assault charge, according to the complaint. Martin's charges include attempted rape of a victim under 10 years old, attempted rape of a victim under the age of 10 compelled by force or threat,  gross sexual imposition, attempted gross sexual imposition, intimidation of a victim in a criminal case,  sexual contact with a minor, and assault.

According to the complaint, the defendant was a minor when the alleged crimes occurred, between the age of 14 through 16 years old. Because of his age at the time of the alleged crimes, the case was sent to the Mahoning County Common Pleas Juvenile Division Court.

The police report states that the victim told police she was afraid to report the alleged incidents as Martin allegedly threatened to hurt her.

Martin appeared in juvenile court on Thursday and pleaded a denial of the charges against him.

He is being held at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.

A pre-trial is set for Tuesday at 10:30 am at the JJC.
