The Pennsylvania State Police is looking out for furry friends as winter slowly approaches and colder temperatures become more frequent.

Pets and other animals that are left outdoors must have access to an appropriately sized shelter that protects them from the weather, keeps them dry and allows them to retain body heat.

Furthermore, it is recommended that dogs that remain tethered outside unattended can only remain there for 30 minutes when temperatures are below 32 degrees.

"Basic needs include proper sustenance to maintain a healthy body weight, as well as clean, unfrozen water to avoid dehydration," said Corporal Michael Spada, an animal cruelty officer of the PSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

It is encouraged that if you believe a pet is suffering from a weather-related illness or injury that you may take them to receive veterinary care.

Both the PSP and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation want to remind pet owners and those who keep their pets outdoors that they are required to provide for their animals basic needs or they may face potential animal neglect or cruelty charges.
