A former employee at the Target store in Boardman is accused of stealing over $16,500 from the business over the course of her employment that lasted just five days.

According to a police report, the employee stole a total of $16,545 over the course of her employment at the store between November 8 and 13. Police say the employee did this by ringing up gift cards with a cash payment.

Police say when the cash drawer opened to accept the payment, the suspect would simply close it again without putting any money in the drawer, which activated the gift cards and allowed her to use them without paying.

In all, the woman allegedly rang up 34 gift cards each valued between $400 and $495, which she allegedly used to purchase items from the store over the course of her employment.

Police say the woman quit her job at the store before the investigation was complete.

The suspect's name has not been released, as no charges have been filed at this time.
