Sharon mother says no punishment is enough after Farrell man is sentenced for her son's murder
A Farrell man has been sentenced to 15 to 50 years in prison after entering a plea deal last month in the shooting death of a Sharon teenager.
The mother of Gavin D. Beighley said what her son went through was senseless after 21-year-old Curtis Coleman lll was sentenced for Beighley's death.
"It still doesn't feel long enough," Gavin's mother, Jessica Beighley, said, "You can't bring him back."
It was January 2023 when police said Beighley was bicycling with friends along East Budd Street near Dock Street when shots were fired at them. The teens tried to flee, but Beighley was shot and collapsed then died in the hospital.
Jessica Beighley describes her son as "golden."
"He had a heart of gold. He would give you the shoes off his feet...the shirt off his back if you needed it, without hesitation," she said, "He loved everybody."
When Curtis Coleman was arrested, police said he admitted firing the shots and hid the gun in his room.
In October, Coleman pleaded guilty to reduced charges of third-degree murder and using a weapon with a defaced serial number.
Beighley's mother said the judge took his time in the court Tuesday to hear from many of Beighley's loved ones before the sentencing.
"He read all 49 statements that came in," she said, "He pointed out that the world lost a great kid."
She told 21 News her son showed his good character all through his life up until the moment he was shot and killed.
She explained that when her son was riding bikes with friends that night as he was shot, he was trying to help a friend get home safely.
She said she hopes no mother ever has to experience this.
"Hopefully some tragedy won't happen to another family," she said, "It's senseless. I don't know what is happening in our community but it needs to stop. It's hurting a lot of people."
