DeWine signs executive order on name, image, likeness compensation for student athletes
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has signed an executive order on fairness in name, image, likeness (NIL) compensation for student athletes in Ohio.
This executive order stems from a settlement entered by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and several athletic conferences, which if given full approval, would allow for higher education institutions to compensate their student athletes for the use of their NIL.
While the settlement has not officially been approved yet, the executive order states that some states have already authorized action to compensate their students for their NIL prior to the approval of the settlement.
According to the executive order signed on Monday, higher education institutions in Ohio who are covered by this settlement shall join the states that will begin compensating their athletes immediately.
However, these institutions may not use money allocated to them by the State of Ohio for that compensation.
The executive order will expire once the settlement is approved and comes into full effect.
