The Ohio EPA is chipping a portion of the $16.5 million needed for a long awaited project to reduce the flow of sewage into the Mahoning River.

The state EPA and Governor’s Office announced on Monday H2Ohio funding for 13 water infrastructure projects around the state, including $1 million to Trumbull County for Meadowbrook sanitary sewer Improvements.

This project includes the construction of more than 10,000 feet of sewer to service 71 structures in Warren Township.

A wastewater treatment plant will also be built at Meadowbrook Drive and Old Leavitt Road servicing approximately 750 properties.

The project, which has been sought after for years, would alleviate the current problem of untreated wastewater from failed septic systems in the neighborhood being poured into the Mahoning River.

Remaining funding for the project would come from the American Rescue Act, an Ohio Public Works grant, an Appalachian Regional Grant, and an $11.6 million loan with $4 million forgiven, and the remainder at zero percent interest.

Homes tied into the sewer system would see bills averaging $621 per year.

With funding available next month, the construction of the project would take an estimated 15 months to complete.
