The Youngstown State football team wrapped up their 2024 season against Northern Iowa at Stambaugh Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Penguins jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Panthers responded before halftime and made it 14-7.
Northern Iowa came out strong out of the half as they scored two touchdowns and held YSU scoreless, as they went into the 4th quarter with a 21-14 lead over the Penguins.
Youngstown State then scored ten straight points and retook the lead, 24-21 with less than five minutes to play. The Panthers did not go away as they returned a kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown and UNI went back up 28-24.
With less than two minutes to play, YSU responded with a touchdown and made it 31-28.
The Panthers got into field goal range and with two seconds left, kicked a 32-yard field goal which sent the game to overtime.
UNI went on to score on their first possession of overtime and took a 31-38 lead.
YSU got their opportunity to respond and senior Tyshon King ran in a 9-yard touchdown. Head coach Doug Phillips and the Penguins elected to go for two instead of sending the game to a second overtime.
On the two-point conversion quarterback Beau Brungard found Austin Bray in the endzone to win the game for YSU.
The Penguins walked it off on the 2-point attempt on Senior Day, as Youngstown State went on to win, 39-38 the final score.
YSU finished the season with a 4-8 record and 3-5 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
