Police chase in Lawrence County leads to fatal crash
A New Castle man is dead and another person is seriously injured following a crash stemming from a multi-county police chase in Lawrence County on Wedesnday.
According to the crash report, the crash happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, November 13 on State Highway 956 north of Eastbrook Harlansburg Road in Scott Township.
Troopers with Lawrence County PSP say the chase began in New Castle and continued onto Highway 956 where the driver, identified as 34-year-old Alex Appod failed to navigate a curve and struck a bridge abutment.
From there, Appod continued eastbound and struck another bridge abutment and spun out.
Appod was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger was taken to the hospital with suspected serious injuries. Neither Appod nor the passenger were wearing a seatbelt.
PSP was assisted by the New Castle, Shenango Township and Volant Township Police Departments, as well as the Scott Township Fire Department, Lawrence County Coroner's Office and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) at the scene.
The circumstances leading up to the chase are unknown at this time.
